Cowboys-Giants MNF: Sorry, I Can’t Fake This One

The Cowboys are playing the Giants on Monday Night Football tonight, and with the World Series not starting until Wednesday and the NBA (Rockets-Lakers!) kicking off Tuesday, this is about the only game in town for sports fans.  While this is a Texas sports-themed segment of our little blog, I am from Houston and can’t pretend to wish anything but misery on the Dallas Cowboys and their legions of insufferable fans.  I have no problem giving the Rangers a little love, can find reasons to support the Spurs and Mavs when the Rockets aren’t directly involved, and will even throw some good vibes the Aggies’ way from time to time, but I draw the line at the Cowboys.  So far this year, the football gods have generally been kind to me on this point, though they showed their sense of humor by having my Texans wilt against an otherwise-imploding Cowboys team a few weeks ago.  I have no particular love for the Giants, but here’s hoping Tony Romo spends tonight picking clumps of dirt out of his facemask and wondering where it all went so very, very wrong. -MBruso

Horns Lose at Home to Iowa State, Silver Lining Elusive

I was all set to be all positive (in a schadenfreude sort of way) and take the angle that at least Texas’ loss at home to perennial Big 12 doormat Iowa State would hurt Oklahoma’s strength of schedule and could ultimately cost the Sooners their #1 BCS ranking, but then OU went out and made the Horns’ tank job totally unnecessary by spitting the bit against Missouri.  So now what’s the silver lining to losing this game?  I’m at a loss with this Texas team—no clue what they’re going to do week to week, and a little queasy about the Garrett Gilbert Era.  Going in to Lincoln and de-pantsing (once again) a cocky, annoying Nebraska team as a parting shot for screwing over the Big 12 was great and all, but looking at the remaining schedule, even though 4 out of 5 games are at home, the only one that looks to be a gimme is Florida Atlantic at home.  Even then, can you really call any game a gimme when you’ve lost at home to UCLA and Iowa State?  But at least football will still be played on Saturdays, and the beer will still be cold, and come the holidays, it’s looking like the Who-Gives-A-Crap Bowl against some other big program having a down year (Florida, I’m looking at you).    In other college football news around the state, A&M and a frisky Baylor team handled the Kansas schools, while Tech took care of Colorado, which seemingly hasn’t been good since I was a kid.  TCU, which is looking pretty nasty, blew out Air Force in a game that I thought would be closer.  I don’t really care much one way or another about the whole BCS debate, other than wanting people to shut up about it, but I would love to see TCU bulldoze someone in a big game while Boise State loses and quietly fades away.  UH beat SMU, but we’re still left with what-ifs for a Cougar team that lost their latest video-game QB a few games ago.  And Rice lost again. -MBruso
